An important sequence of No Time To Die takes place in the beautiful town of Matera in Italy.

The small city is situated on a rocky outcrop in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy.

A cemetery scene and romantic scenes were shot here with James Bond (Daniel Craig) and Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), followed by intense action scenes involving a high-speed chase with a Triumph 1200 motorcycle and Bond's trusted Aston Martin DB5.

The city was also used as a filming location for the Themyscira scenes in Wonder Woman.

In Entertainment Weekly, director Cary Fukunaga explains: "Mark Tildesley, our production designer, pitched it as a great location to start off the film. The monochrome nature of Matera already makes it feel like a large necropolis. There's a lot of metaphors there in terms of what Bond was leaving behind for the next chapter. So that's kind of how we got there. We also combined two different cities in the sequence. The bridge that we say connects Matera to the necropolis is actually in a neighbouring town around 30, 40 minutes away called Gravina in Puglia. We made it seem like it's all part of the same journey, but it's actually not part of the same town.

Daniel Craig did lots of stunts himself, including driving the 'doughnuts' with the Aston Martin DB5 in the town square.

Among the set locations scouted by the production team are accommodation facilities Palazzo Gattini in Piazza Duomo, Casa Diva in Via Giumella, the popular hotel Sextantio in the SassoBarisano and the Beach Restaurant Riva dei Ginepri, in Marina di Pisticci.

Gravina

The bridge where Bond's gets attacked by Primo on the Triumph motorcycle and the Maserati Quattroporte and where he jumps off, was actualy filmed at Gravina, about 30 minutes from Matera. But the location of the Ponte Acquedotto sul torrente Gravina blends in perfectly with the Matera shots.

Sapri train station

On September 24th 2019, filming also took place at Sapri train station in Italy, which was changed into the fictional town name 'Civita Lucana'. Bond and Madeleine arrive here after the chase in Matera, with the DB5 all battered up and full of bullet holes. They probably get on a train, and there might be some action or a scene inside the station itself.

Sapri is not really nearby, it's a 3-hour drive from Matera.

Comments

I have just had the pleasure of 4 days in Matera and it is every bit as beautiful and magical as it looks in the film - perhaps, given it’s rich non-Bond history, even more so. Highly recommended for anybody who can travel there. It is truly unlike any other place I have ever been and I have been fortunate to have travelled a lot. Remarkable in many ways but certainly for it’s total lack of ‘Bond Tourism’! I could count the number of ‘Bond’ specific info on one hand - even in areas like the square where the DB5 does donuts! Gravina is a 30 min drive away but is stunning and well worth the effort to get over there.
