ICT 1301 computer
An ICT 1301 computer is seen in the movies The Man With The Golden Gun (1974) and For Your Eyes Only (1981). This wall-filling computer looks great on a set because of its many buttons and meters. Usually only parts of the immense computer are used in the films.
In The Man With The Golden Gun, an ICT 1301 controls the solar power generation station in Scaramanga's (Christopher Lee) island lair. The ICT 1301 computer can be seen clearly when Scaramanga gives Bond (Roger Moore) a tour of his project and later when Bond and Mary Goodnight (Britt Ekland) leave the exploding lair.
In the movie For Your Eyes Only, an ICT 1301 can be seen in the Operations Room of the St. Georges spy ship where the A.T.A.C. system is installed. The machine is controlled by the senior MI6 crew member in the Operations Room. On the same ship, we can also see several Philips computers.
A complete ICT 1301 computer had a footprint of about 6m by 7m (20ft by 23ft) and weighed approximately five tonnes. The computer came with a punch card reader and printer built in to the body, which were used to enter and save data by means of creating a series of holes in a piece of stiff paper.
About 150 of the ICT 1301 machines were ever built, of which only three are known to still exist. From 2003 to today, two scientists are working on restoring one of the few remaining ICT 1301 computers, nicknamed 'Flossie'. They hope to have the machine working again and on display in 2016. Read more about the restoration on the official restoration website, or the BBC or Daily Mail website.
ICT 1301 computers can also be seen in Blakes 7 (Season 1, Episode 2 'Space Fall', 1978), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), Doctor Who (Season 8, 'Terror of the Autons', 1971) and The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1974).
