Debbie McWilliams: next James Bond should be an "enigma," not a familiar face
Former James Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams has shared her thoughts on the search for the next 007, saying she would prefer to see an unexpected actor take on the role rather than one of the frequently mentioned names.

In an interview with The Independent, McWilliams said she does not see rumored contenders such as Callum Turner, Harris Dickinson or Jacob Elordi as the right choice for Bond. Instead, she believes the actor should retain a sense of mystery.
"I don't want to see any of them as James Bond because we now know so much about them," McWilliams told The Independent. "It is absolutely essential that he retains a total enigma."
McWilliams served as casting director on the Bond series for four decades, working on 13 films from For Your Eyes Only (1981) through No Time To Die (2021). During that time, she cast Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as 007.
According to McWilliams, Bond works best when audiences know very little about the actor behind the character. She pointed out that Dalton, Brosnan and Craig were not major stars when they were cast, allowing audiences to believe in them as the British secret agent.
She also reflected on the initial reaction to Daniel Craig's casting, recalling that many people opposed the decision before Casino Royale proved them wrong. As a result, she believes producers should not rely too heavily on public opinion when selecting the next Bond.
The interview comes as the search for the next James Bond continues under casting director Nina Gold. Earlier this year, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that casting for the new Bond has officially begun, while director Denis Villeneuve and writer Steven Knight are attached to the next film.
