American Express Centurion Card

James Bond travels in style with an American Express Centurion Card (also known as the Black Card) in Quantum of Solace (2008).

Bond wants to charter an Ocean Sky airplane to leave Austria and go to La Paz, Bolivia after his adventures at the Tosca Opera in Bregenz. The lady behind the desk, in full Ocean Sky uniform (made by the fashion designer Hugo Boss), uses an Ingenico 5100 credit card terminal (find on eBay for $25) to scan Bond’s American Express black card, but the card is blocked, probably by MI6 to stop Bond from going anywhere.

The American Express Black Card is one of the most famous and exclusive credit cards in the world, only given out to the most wealthy clients. The card is by invitation-only to platinum card holders after they meet certain criteria. The exact criteria are different for each country and are not public, but the owner needs to be a former Platinum card holder and must have a considerable net worth. There are two different issues of the Centurion Card, personal and business.

The black card was introduced as a plastic card in 1999, but since 2006 the card is made of anodized titanium, with the information and numbers stamped into the metal (but in some countries a plastic version is given as well).

The annual fee for the card in the United Kingdom is £1800 plus a one-time joining fee of £4000, but the card gives many benefits including a dedicated concierge and travel agent, an unlimited spending amount, complimentary air tickets fro companions, access to the most exclusive airport clubs and much more.

A prop black card used in the film is currently on display at the Bond In Motion exhibition in the London Film Museum.
