As of the 1997 film Tomorrow Never Dies the Walther P99 has been Bond's weapon of choice. Bond's standard issue handgun prior to the P99 was the Walther PPK, a shortened version of the Walter PP ("Police Pistol", German). Arguably, the more appropriate choice for Bond would be the P99 Compact, since small size and concealability are the reasons why Ian Fleming chose the PPK as the preferred weapon. However, both on screen and in the marketing stills, Bond is obviously sporting the full-size P99.
The P99 series offers the law enforcement professional a number of special features and various trigger mechanisms to meet the agencies needs. The line includes both full size and compact models for both uniform and undercover use.
The P99 Series is the only hammerless pistol available to offer three trigger options:
P99AS- Anti-Stress
Traditional double action and single action modes, and the added feature of the anti-stress trigger position which is engaged after reloading.
P99DAO - Double Action Only
The striker is at rest with no preload for a long smooth trigger pull. The pull is consistent in length and force from the first shot to the last.
P99QA -Quick Action
Partially preloaded striker provides a uniform short light trigger pull. This variation is a favorite among many sportsmen and police tactical units.
A licensed version of the P99 was manufactured in the USA by Smith & Wesson walther p99 od under the name Smith & Wesson walther p99 semi automatic pistols 99. These guns have USA-made slides; the frame and mechanism are made in Germany.
